Friday Review: Forever blowing bubbles

Traditional metrics are no longer valid when it comes to measuring the value of the new breed of social media companies.

I started working in the telecoms industry as the dot.com bubble burst. For the first few years I heard the refrain "you should have been here in '99" ad nauseam, as colleagues described the glittering trade shows and flashy press events that I could have experienced had I had the foresight to have been born a couple of years earlier. The industry of course bounced back and came to a gradual realisation that the new reality was how things were likely to be from here on in: there was to be no return to the heady days of the late 1990s. But recent developments suggest that we could be livin' la vida loca (it was a chart-topper in 1999, folks!) once more. Opinion is divided on whether we're floating around in another Internet bubble or not. While some are predicting that the social media space will be a big growth area for the coming years, others are already warning that this latest bubble will burst before too long…
