Telecoms networks are the basis of our industry, but business models will have to evolve if the telcos are to maintain their margins.

In today's telecoms world, devices and services make headlines, rather than the underlying networks that support them. The network is no longer king. The days when a telco could deploy a network then sit back and watch the money roll in are long gone. However, this week we got a timely reminder of the importance of the network, albeit in a world in which customers call the shots and the telcos need to look at new business models to survive. Wholesale network and business services provider Cable & Wireless Worldwide recognises that customers think in terms of devices, rather than how those devices are connected, said Diarmid Massey, VP carrier services, global markets, at Carriers World in London on Wednesday.
