Carriers wise up to costly 3G auctions

The spiraling cost of third-generation mobile licenses throughout Europe is forcing more companies either to cooperate or pull out of the race altogether. Three prospective candidates have already withdrawn from the spectrum auction in Germany due to begin on 31 July. Now, Dutch operator Versatel Telecom International BV, of Amsterdam, has complained to the European Commission that the current spectrum auction in the Netherlands discriminates against new entrants…
