AT&T's frame relay crash highlights vulnerable nature of data networks

The meltdown of AT&T's frame relay network in the United States has sent a disturbing reminder to carriers and customers relying on sophisticated data technology around the world: No matter how advanced today's modern data networks may be, they're still very vulnerable. AT&T, the leading U.S. supplier of frame relay services, wrote a new chapter in data communication history books when a catastrophic failure of its high-speed data network left more than 6,000 customers without service for up to 26 hours. The customers, many of them banks, retailers and manufacturers, rely heavily on the AT&T frame relay service to communicate and transact with their colleagues and customers. It is not the first time a major data network has collapsed: WorldCom Inc.'s competitive frame relay network went down two years ago, and more recently service was interrupted in Sprint's supposedly self-healing router-based IP network…
