More than one in ten (13%) business calls in the UK are still conducted via a landline phone — significantly more than in Spain (1%), Germany (2%), Italy (3%), France (3%), Australia (3%), Canada (5%) and the USA (8%).

That’s according to new global research from communications technology company Fuze, which analysed data reflecting engagement with the Fuze platform from more than 2.5 million online meetings, 20 million calls and 33 million messages.

The research found that while 13% of all UK business calls are held over a landline, only 5% are joined via a mobile.

By far the most popular way to join calls at work is using a laptop, yet UK workers are reluctant to switch on their webcams, with only 20% of meetings using video. This compares to nearly half of all meetings in countries including Denmark (48%) and the Netherlands (49%).

Commenting on these findings, Bradlee Allen, Product Evangelist at Fuze, said “Our big data analysis shows that when users turn on their video during meetings, attendees are more engaged and stay connected for longer. Given that so many UK businesses are still purely relying on landline phones to run meetings and make calls, we are looking at a major drain on UK productivity.

“In order to attract the best talent, and keep up with other countries around the world, UK firms need to make sure they’re offering employees the latest technology. This means moving away from landlines to more cloud-based communications software and more advanced collaboration apps.”
