World Telecom Labs (WTL) is attending the first Telecom Infra Project (TIP) Summit which starts today at Facebook’s HQ in California.

TIP is an initiative co-founded by Facebook and designed to bring key stakeholders together to “reimagine the traditional approach to building and deploying telecom network infrastructure”.

WTL will be sharing its knowledge and expertise on two fronts: connecting rural villages in Africa; and helping operators in both emerging and developed markets to deploy VoIP networks to reduce congestion on existing networks.

TIP’s members include a raft of telco giants including MTN and vodafone with whom World Telecom Labs is well-placed to share its experience and ideas having built a multi-award-winning niche for itself in the African telco market.

Leigh Smith, MD of WTL, said “This week will be extremely interesting and productive as the giants of the tech and telecom world join us to discuss the unique challenges faced in providing reliable and cost-effective networks across Africa.

Our multi-award-winning rural connectivity system is market-proven, sustainable and commercially viable. There is no need for the wheel to be reinvented. Now the industry must join together to finally Connect the Unconnected.”

So far this year, WTL has picked up three awards for its work in Africa:

At the inaugural Capacity Africa awards in September, WTL won in the Best Technology Deployment category for the development of Vivada, its rural telephony system.

Earlier in the year WTL was named Telecom Innovation Company of the Year at the annual Nigerian Telecom Awards for Vivada and was the winner of the Connecting West Africa category at the prestigious West AfricaCom Awards in recognition of its work in Nigeria.
