Comensura, a managed service provider for temporary labour, has revealed that the telecoms industry is suffering a skills shortage that is preventing organisations from finding qualified temporary candidates to aid growth and technological advancement.

Working closely with recruitment agencies that supply temporary telecoms staff, Comensura has recognised that some organisations are struggling to find candidates who are equipped with up-to-date skills and knowledge. As telecommunications is an ever-changing industry, it’s proving difficult to find candidates with specific experience.

Comensura’s data analysis also shows that the majority of telecoms professionals, both engineers and support technicians, aren’t prepared to travel for more than an hour to take up a temporary position. Organisations therefore have no choice but to look for candidates nearby, thereby reducing the pool of qualified and experienced telecoms professionals available to them even further. Comensura has also identified that this has had a knock-on effect on the time it takes to fill a temporary telecoms vacancy, meaning that posts stay vacant longer than anticipated.

Recruitment agencies that source temporary telecoms professionals predict that the demand for both support and engineering roles will go up, widening the skills gap and making it more difficult to source temporary staff in the telecoms sector.

Hoa Ngo, managing director at Comensura says: “A sector like telecoms requires workers with often niche skills who can be difficult to find. Some locations may not have access to many qualified candidates in the area, which only narrows the pool even further. Organisations demanding temporary telecoms professionals should broaden their focus and work with multiple recruitment agencies or managed service providers to have access to the full range of candidates available to them.”
