Yandex, a leading mobile and artificial intelligence company announces that the alpha version of its mobile browser for Android has started supporting web extensions. Yandex is the world’s first Chromium-based mobile browser to support web extensions.
Yandex Browser will enable its mobile users to install their favorite desktop browser tools in their mobile browser including password management, night mode browsing, bookmarks for favorite webpages and more. The browser will automatically block and prohibit the installation of bad extensions, creating a safe environment for users.
Yandex’s browser also allows web developers to extend their reach and capitalise on the mobile browser market.
“We believe that extensions for the mobile browser may even replace some mobile applications and extend user experience by using new tools in your browser,” said head of Yandex mobile Browser Dmitriy Timko. “For example, if a user sets up a password manager, he can install an extension with a similar function. This enables you to de-clutter your mobile device from unnecessary applications that are used in conjunction with a browser and space on your handset. Extensions typically needs significantly less memory than mobile applications while performing the same functions.”
While developing the Alpha version of the browser which supports web extensions, the Yandex Browser team worked closely with extensions developers both within the company and externally. Users can find and add extensions from an in-built Yandex Browser catalogue or from a Chromium extensions store.
Yandex is inviting developers and technology enthusiasts to trial and contribute to future developments of the alpha version of the mobile Yandex Browser for Android.
Yandex Browser is available for desktop computers, iPad, iPhone, and smartphones and tablets based on Android. According to Yandex data, in August 2016 Yandex.Browser’s daily audience on mobile was about 5 million users.
