Cobham, Kapsch provide public safety network on Rio metro

Cobham Wireless, a global leader in the provision of advanced wireless coverage and mobile communication systems, and telecoms infrastructure provider Kapsch, have announced the installation of the robust TETRA public safety network on the new Metro line built for the Rio Olympics in Brazil. The installation will provide premium public safety communications for the Line 4 route, expected to transport 300,000 people per day during August.

The TETRA system provides mission critical communications facilities for emergency services and transport staff, spanning the entire length of the new Line 4. This covers 16km of track from General Osório in Ipanema to Jardim Oceânico in Barra da Tijuca and includes all tunnels, stations and an outdoor perimeter around each station. Cobham Wireless is providing a fully redundant public safety DAS solution including remote radio units (RRUs), head end equipment (OMUs), passive components, design and commissioning engineering services.

This project is the latest of several high-profile Cobham Wireless installations in Brazil, with the company providing public safety DAS infrastructure for the rest of the Metro network and cellular active DAS solutions in three of the largest stadia in the city: the Engenao Stadium, Mineirão Stadium, and the Maracanã Arena.
