Openmind Networks today announced A1 Telekom Austria AG has extended its agreement with the mobile messaging vendor to provide a seamless Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and instant messaging experience for customers in Vienna, Austria.

The new agreement sees Openmind deploy its state-of-the-art IP Short Message Gateway (IP-SM-GW) solution to support SMS over IP and Instant Messaging Services for A1. This will allow the Austrian operator to provide high-quality VoLTE (Voice and SMS) services to customers by the end of 2016, further increasing this number in 2017. Openmind’s IP-SM-GW is fully compliant with 3GPP standards.

Openmind previously provided a Short Service Messaging Centre (SMSC) to A1 through its Traffic Control messaging platform, and as a result of the new agreement is now A1 single vendor for SMSC and IP-SM-GW. This allows the company to offer a consolidated solution by co-locating the IP-SM-GW on the SMSC, providing a complete messaging platform with an easier convergent service set-up and a reduced time-to-market. The company integrated its IP-SM-GW with A1 Telekom’s IMS Core in less than a year, going live with the IP-SM-SW in November 2014. The consolidated solution will allow A1 to launch new Rich Communication Services (RCS) quickly and easily in the future.

“We’ve been impressed with the systems and services already provided by Openmind, and it was a logical decision to choose the company as our single vendor for both services,” said Jürgen Seif, Mobile Messaging Expert of A1. “Openmind’s experience in the market and on-site support proved to be a great help in readying the service for deployment, by discovering and fixing any potential bugs quickly and effectively. We look forward to extending our messaging capability to include rich communications in the future.”

A1 serves approximately 5.5 million mobile subscribers in Austria. It is part of the Telekom Austria Group, the leading communications provider in Central and Eastern Europe with more than 24 million customers across its markets of operations. Openmind has deployed its Traffic Control platform amongst a number of operators in the group, including a USSD Gateway to support new customer self-care services for Vip mobile.

“We’ve been working with A1 and the wider Telecom Austria Group for a number of years to develop innovative messaging services for the future,” said Alex Duncan, CEO of Openmind Networks. “We’re proud to have proved the versatility of our technology, and look forward to rolling out further support for IP messaging and providing a seamless user experience for A1 Telekom’s customers.”
