Baicells showcased the world’s first LAA small cell in both Intel and Baicells’ booths during the recently concluded Mobile World Congress, held in Barcelona. As one of the latest LTE technologies, License Assisted Access (LAA) leverages both licensed spectrum and unlicensed spectrum to carry data traffic of mobile service. The core part of LAA technology was finished in December 2015 in 3GPP, and two months later, Baicells launched the world’s first LAA small cell using Intel’s TranscedeTM SoC processing chip. Based on 3GPP Release 13, the LAA small cell utilizes Listen-Before-Talk (LBT) mechanism to ensure coexistence of LTE and Wi-Fi over unlicensed spectrum.

The study item of LAA was first approved at the 3GPP standard meeting in December 2013. LAA was developed to reduce operators’ ever-increasing network capacity pressure, to discover more available spectrum resources, to improve the data transmission rate of the mobile network and to enhance user experience. LAA also can deliver better network performance.

“Aggregation of licensed spectrum and unlicensed spectrum helps the mobile operator reduce their expense on spectrum while still being able to improve the user experience. LBT eliminates any effects on the existing Wi-Fi and makes LAA coexist with Wi-Fi,” said Mr. Wei Bai, VP, marketing, Baicells. “Baicells’ LAA small cell adopts Intel TranscedeTM SoC processors. The excellent processing ability of the chipset can greatly optimize the performance of the small cell. Combined with Baicells’ own technical advantages, we launched the world’s first LAA small cell to help operators open a new era of the LTE world.”
