The growth of Devicescape’s curated virtual network (CVN) of UK WiFi hotspots to over 500,000 is strong evidence of venue WiFi technology being proven on the High Street. This is according to Synaptix Technologies, the UK company behind the design, installation and support of many of the UK High Street’s most popular public WiFi services.

“This milestone is not just about the growing quantity of UK public hotspots as Devicescape only adds those meeting stringent quality of service criteria and is therefore an accurate measure of how far WiFi technology has progressed for ease of use, speed and reliability,” said Graham Cove, Director of Business Development, Synaptix Technologies.

The rapid growth of Devicescape’s CVN in just two years has largely been down to more retailers offering free WiFi to customers as a convenience for web, email and social media access.

Retailers’ increasing focus on location-based and instore customer engagement initiatives is also making WiFi indispensable for achieving their emerging cross-channel marketing activities.

“As the strategic value of high quality public WiFi shifts from being a pure convenience service to enabling real-time customer engagement, mobile payments and operational tasks, to remain competitive it will become vital for retail venue owners to more regularly benchmark and review the performance of their operators’ services,” said Graham Cove.

Devicescape’s recent survey of the most frequented High Street retail and restaurant venues found the top five free WiFi services by quality of service to be Greggs, Marks & Spencer, Boots, Pizza Express and Asda. Four of these are supported by Synaptix on behalf of network operators EE and The Cloud.

“We are delighted to be supporting many of the UK’s leading High Street retailers and convenience restaurants,” added Cove. “Devicescape’s report is a testament to the quality of the service we provide to Sky, EE and the retailers involved.”
