Peplink, a leader in developing internet load balancing and VPN bonding solutions, has announced Pepwave Max Transit, a Wi-Fi Hotspot with LTE capabilities aimed at the growing mass transit connectivity sector.

Designed primarily for deployment by bus, coach and light rail operators, the new Max Transit (MT) model uses a ruggedized chassis with no-moving parts and includes a single active LTE modem. The MT also comes with two dual SIMs per modem to allow smooth transition between cellular providers as it passes through local and international coverage areas.

“Max Transit builds on our deep experience of delivering vehicle connectivity solutions for critical blue light services such as police, fire and ambulance crews and extends that expertise to transit operators with a solution that meets both operational and business use case needs,” explains Andy Harris, VP Sales for Peplink.

The MT Family includes a Duo model designed for bandwidth hungry deployments with two LTE connections plus redundant SIM slots allowing WAN diversity and resiliency of up to four different cellular providers while offering the same small footprint and vehicle compatible power inputs.

Says Harris: “Operators can reduce initial CapEX and grow bandwidth based on demand. In combination with our dual SIM capability, fleets that travel internationally can easily setup MTs with roaming capability using the most cost effective local and national carriers without having to compromise on performance or carry out physical reconfiguration if a route needs to change.”

Each MT is also equipped with an on-board GPS for fleet tracking and Peplink provides free access to InControl 2 (IC2), a fleet management utility for devices within warranty that simplifies deployments with configuration cloning and other remote access features. IC2 also has powerful APIs that enable integration with 3rd party application such as route tracking and bus timetable notification systems to offer more value within a single device instead of the cumbersome tasks of deploying and integrating separate systems on-board each vehicle.

Harris also highlights additional opportunities, “To further enhance operators’ revenue potential, each MT supports social Wi-Fi capabilities enabling the capture of user profile data for targeted marketing activities and captive portal that allow advertising on-board as part of the Wi-Fi availability. As the system includes GPS data, advertising can be geo-located based on the vehicles’ current location and destination to provide adverts that are more relevant to the passengers, such as special offers at shops along the route.”

Demand and deployment of high-speed internet connectivity on coach, bus and light rail has increased dramatically over the last few years. New services such as passenger Wi-Fi and multimedia entertainment services have been joined by operational benefits such as IP enabled smartcard payment systems, active CCTV surveillance monitoring and on-board digital signage.

Within the bus and coach sector, Peplink technology has already been deployed by Coach America, one of the largest bus service companies in the United States that operates commuter buses serving employees of Silicon Valley technology companies, among other clients. Using Peplink Pepwave technologies, Coach America services now offer secure Wi-Fi access via a durable router with multiple carrier connections to ensure reliable Internet without interruption while in transit. Peplink has established distribution agreements and a network of partners serving flagship customers across Europe backed up by local technical and sales support team based in the UK.

“MT is the first product designed specifically for this market and we will be showcasing the new model at the upcoming Coach & Bus Live in September as well as details of our first batch of installed customers,” Andy Harris added.
