HTC on Sunday unveiled the HTC One M9, the latest edition of its flagship smartphone range, and its first fitness tracker.

Due to launch in mid-March, the M9 packs the kind of features that users have come to expect from high-end handsets: a 20 megapixel camera designed to work well under low-light conditions, that also shoots 4K video; a large, high-resolution touchscreen that reaches to the very edges of the metal casing; and dual front-facing speakers that simulate 5.1 surround sound.

Nonetheless, HTC insists that it has "built its reputation on challenging expectations in the mobile industry," said Cher Wang, chairwoman of HTC. The HTC One M9 accomplishes this once again with stunning elegance and design, combined with smart features that help bring your world to life, connecting you in a deeper way to the things you consider most important."

The M9 can also stream audio, video and images to compatible connected devices, such as TVs and speakers.

In addition, HTC also launched its first wearable device in the form of a fitness tracker worn on the wrist that sends performance data to an app as well as a health and fitness network called UA Record, which is operated by sportswear specialist Under Armour.

Called the HTC Grip, it is compatible with iOS and Android handsets, as well as Bluetooth-enabled accessories such as heartrate monitors.

"Our partnership with Under Armour has allowed us to direct our combined ambition, talent and passion towards developing new ways to empower athletes to make the most of their training every day," said Drew Bamford, corporate vice president of HTC Creative Labs.

The Grip is due to go on sale in North America in the spring.
