Spectrum allocations: Oil and water

Spectrum sales generated eye-watering sums of money in some markets, while others struggled to drum up interest in their auctions.

Telecoms operators have spent staggering sums on spectrum in the past 12 months, but prices have varied wildly between geographies and frequency bands. As of mid-December, bidding in the AWS-3 auction in the US had slowed down considerably, suggesting the end could be in sight. To date, the 70 participants have collectively bid an eye-watering $43.9 billion. The final results are unlikely to be out until January, but the likes of AT&T and Verizon are widely predicted to be among the big spenders. T-Mobile US is also taking part, as is market disruptor Dish Network. While spectrum is often described as being as precious as oil to telecoms operators, with prices reaching well into the tens of billions it is not unreasonable to question who the real winners are here, government coffers aside. US consumers are doubtless–or should be–wary of the sums their service providers are having to part with…
