People in 2014: Contractual capers

Some of the industry’s biggest players changed their leadership teams this year; 2015 will be challenging for the top decision-makers.

“Ones to watch in 2014 include Zeinal Bava,” we predicted a year ago. How right we were, although the year did not pan out quite as we had expected for the executive. This time last year Bava was chief executive of Brazil’s Oi and had recently been named CEO-elect of the merged Oi/Portugal Telecom business. Now Bava is out of a job and Oi is under the control of finance chief Bayard Gontijo. It all went wrong for Bava in October. He handed in his notice when it became apparent that the merger he architected between Oi and Portugal Telecom would be unravelled. Indeed, in December Oi agreed to sell its Portuguese operations to Altice in a deal worth €7.4 billion. With Oi looking set to be a key player in the consolidation of the Brazilian mobile market, Bava’s successor will not have an easy ride in 2015.
