Happy Thanksgiving for FCC but US telcos need to talk turkey

Customers could well be stuck with the bill as operators fork out nearly $40 billion and counting on AWS-3 spectrum.

This Thanksgiving the U.S. Treasury will be grateful for operators' need to satisfy their customers' insatiable demand for data, after bids in auction 97 - the AWS-3 auction – reached $38.2 billion. A chunk of the proceeds has already been earmarked for a nationwide emergency services network called FirstNet. However, the cost of rolling that out is understood to be around $7 billion, so the remainder of the takings represents a huge windfall for the government and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)…
