World Telecom Labs (WTL) today announced that its specialist 2nd generation VoIP switches have been deployed by fast-growing Italian voice and data service provider, Professional Link (PLink). The switches are being used to manage the transfer of voice calls between PLink’s VoIP network and other fibre and cellular networks.

PLink provides voice, data, hosting and IT services to an established base of corporate, business and public organisations in Northern Italy. Throughout Europe, operators like PLink are using VoIP networks to provide competitive alternative services. Vital to the success of these operators is the effective and efficient transfer of customer traffic from VoIP networks to and from other fibre and cellular networks.

WTL’s range of 2nd generation VoIP and hybrid VoIP/TDM switches have been specifically designed to replace the huge, expensive, maintenance-heavy switches that have traditionally been used to transfer VoIP traffic onto other networks. They are capable of handling 1000s of simultaneous calls and were awarded second place in the Best Cost Efficiency Innovation category at last year’s AfricaCom awards.

WTL 2nd generation VoIP switches have been installed and integrated with PLink’s proprietary CPEs. As well as intelligently routing calls to and from the appropriate outbound carrier, the switches use the latest techniques to increase capacity on PLink’s existing network and enable it to both guarantee zero downtime and high quality VoIP calls for its growing customer base.

PLink’s team were particularly impressed with the expertise, speed and efficiency of WTL’s engineers.
