Telecom Italia Sparkle announces it has signed all relevant contracts and is among initial investors for the implementation of the new submarine cable system connecting Europe to Singapore.
The ceremony took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on March 7th at the presence of all consortium members.

The new cable system is planned to reach 17 countries including Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, UAE. Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

Devised with the latest 100Gbps technology, SEA-ME-WE 5 is a multiregional superhighway that will provide lowest latency and represents an additional network layer of diversity and resilience for the heavily loaded Asia to Europe route.

With a design capacity set at 24 Terabyte per second on 3 fiber pairs deployed for a total length of 19.500km, the ready for service date is expected in the first half of 2016.

“As a global player with a relevant share of our business generated in the areas connected by the new cable, with this investment in SEA-ME-WE 5 Sparkle has secured its leadership in the fast growing Asia to Middle East and Europe route”, says Elisabetta Ripa, CEO of TI Sparkle. “Moreover, our participation to SEA-ME-WE 5 will enhance Sparkle’s customer proposition with a diversified and low latency route to and from Asia, thus strengthening further Sparkle’s role as major cable landing hub in Europe and the Mediterranean”.

Sicily today accounts for a wide portion of all capacity landing in Europe and with the new SEA-ME-WE 5 cable landing in Catania the share of business is expected to grow, making Sicily leading cable landing hub in Europe.
