Friday Review: Two and three make one

It has been a funny old year for O2 in the U.K.; could a takeover be on the cards?

This week the Total Telecom team started work on our usual end-of-year content – our Review of the Year, predictions for 2014 and so on. Looking back over the past 11 months in telecoms has led to some interesting discussion in the office over the past few days. One company in particular that drew our attention was U.K. mobile operator O2, whose strategy this year has at times given us pause for thought. In February we noted that missing out on 2.6-GHz spectrum in the U.K.'s LTE auction could see O2 struggle to meet capacity demands on its mobile network. We speculated that it might partner with the likes of BT, which won 2x15 MHz and 1x20 MHz of spectrum in the 2.6-GHz band, but a deal never came. A month later we questioned O2's decision to sell its fixed broadband assets to BSkyB at a time when most mobile operators are moving to bulk up their fixed assets both for backhaul purposes and to enable them to offer triple and quad…
