Friday Review: Two for one

Verizon's $130 billion deal with Vodafone and Microsoft's Nokia acquisition dominated the telecoms headlines this week.

You wait all summer for an interesting news story and then two come along at once. Separate announcements from Samsung and Google this week gave us a glimpse of the not-too-distant future: Chocolate-powered timekeeping devices. OK, I'm joking. Samsung unveiling its Galaxy Gear smartwatch and Google's unusual co-branding deal with Nestle to name the next version of the Android OS KitKat were not the biggest news stories to break in the past few days. The most-read stories on Total Telecom this week of course came courtesy of a pair of significant M&A announcements. It doesn't seem very long since we were writing about the disenfranchisement of mobile operators at the hands of the major handset brands but the difference in dollar amounts between Verizon's full takeover of its mobile unit and Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's mobile devices business highlights how the fortunes of many of the hardware makers have changed in a few short years…
