Annual smartphone shipments to hit 1bn for first time in 2013

IDC predicts global mobile phone volumes to reach 2.3 billion in 2017.

Global smartphone shipments are set to surpass 1 billion units in 2013, according to the latest predictions from IDC. The research firm said the combination of popular of sub-$200 smartphones in emerging markets and attractive subsidies in mature markets will drive a 40% increase in worldwide shipments of smartphones this year…
