The Yearsley Group, a giant of the UK food industry has deployed a Fibre Ethernet solution from Zen Internet, one of the UK’s leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs), to securely share information and applications between offices and remote workers.

The Fibre Ethernet solution has allowed Yearsley to embrace IP-based voice and video calls, together with remote training and resulted in vast improvements in performance and productivity for the company, particularly at remote sites that connect into the Data Centre.

Systems now connect to the network at over twice the original speed, and the improved connectivity has allowed for a greater degree of collaboration between teams. Yearsley’s internal and remote employees now work together more efficiently, while the in-house IT Helpdesk and Programming and Development teams can now effectively manage the whole estate.

The new solution has also given Yearsley the confidence to invest in new online technologies, further enhancing its business capabilities and providing even greater cost savings. The combination of IP VPN and Microsoft Lync are helping Yearsley work more efficiently between sites and with customers and trading partners.

Chris Gillespie, IT Systems Manager, The Yearsley Group, who estimates a six figure cost saving in productivity alone, said, ‘Zen has proven its expertise in design and consultancy, through to project management and delivery of our network migration, within the agreed time limits. We continue to receive a well-managed solution with highly knowledgeable support.’

Zen designed and implemented a high availability Fibre Ethernet network linking Yearsley’s sites to the company’s disaster recovery site. Establishing speeds of up to 1Gbps provided true enterprise-grade security, together with Zen’s award winning reliability and 24/7 support, the solution provided the Yearsley Group with reliable, high speed connectivity, eliminated bottlenecks and stabilised business critical systems available across all sites, all day, every day.

Zen also designed a high availability Firewall Cluster to operate within its IP VPN Cloud, providing an extra layer of resilience with near instant failover in the event of a problem. Together Zen and the Yearsley Group set out a plan for implementation and migration from the old network to the new, with Zen providing project management and consultancy expertise. The project was completed on time and without any major hiccups.

Zen Internet is making an initial investment of over £3.5 million in its core infrastructure to build a network of local exchange PoPs (Points of Presence), enabling it to offer a broad range of highly competitive Ethernet services to customers.

The new PoPs provide Zen with 200 Ethernet nodes at local exchanges across the UK, which will be connected to its existing MPLS core network via a new backhaul network provided by Cable & Wireless. Zen will use Openreach local loop access to deliver Ethernet services directly from Zen technology located in local exchanges. As a network operator in its own right, Zen will be able to deliver a more extensive range of Ethernet-based connectivity products that will also be very competitively priced.

As well as traditional Fibre Optic services, the new Ethernet portfolio will include delivery over EFM using multiple copper pairs and NGA Ethernet using the Next Generation Access of Fibre-to-the-Cabinet and Fibre-to-the-Premises technology. NGA Ethernet services will be available from Zen’s 200 PoPs plus another 270 exchange locations.
