Support services specialist, Indigo Telecom Group has signed an agreement with IT asset management company N2S, to handle the decommissioning, recovery, disposal and recycling of its customers’ end of life IT equipment.

The deal enables Indigo to add legacy network disposal and value recovery to its network design, management and maintenance skills. This brings a fully end to end service to Indigo’s customers, at a time when simply leaving decommissioned equipment in place is unacceptable. Furthermore, the costs of removal are minimised as engineers may be on site installing new network infrastructure.

Stephen Thompson, CEO of Indigo Telecom Group commented: “The responsible disposal of network equipment can be a good source of revenue to offset the cost of network decommissioning. Operators risk harming their reputation if they choose an ineffective ‘abandon-in-place’ strategy, or do not embrace environmentally responsible disposal solutions. Our partnership with N2S offers a solution whereby we can offer legacy equipment disposal services to customers as part of a package that helps them to realise the full value of their assets as well as safeguarding data through secure destruction methods.”

According to a report published by PricewaterhouseCoopers, nearly 90% of wireline operators indicated that they intend to decommission legacy networks over the next five years, driven by the need to reduce operating costs, improve customer experience, eliminate redundant networks or shift traffic to a more efficient network. Of those surveyed, 75% plan to physically remove decommissioned assets from their network, with a vast majority planning to sell or otherwise dispose of them.

Andrew Gomarsall, Co-Director of N2S commented: “The decommissioning of old IT and telecoms systems is inevitable as technology progresses, and it’s important for operators to have a suitable strategy in place to make the transition to new systems as seamless and environmentally friendly as possible. By partnering with Indigo, we are taking steps to ensure the decommissioning, disposal and recycling of all old IT systems is compliant with UK and EU legislation.”

The services offered by Indigo further support their accreditations in ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Systems and ISO 27001:2005 Information Technology Security Techniques.
