Cloudmark, Inc., the global leader in messaging threat protection for communication service providers, today announced Cloudmark Security Platform for Broadband, which provides fixed-line, mobile carriers and web hosting providers with carrier-grade protection against spam and other messaging threats within their broadband networks. Cloudmark helps providers address a range of messaging threats including sophisticated email spam, malware and web-based attacks while delivering enhanced protection to users.

As they face ever-increasing messaging threats, fixed-line, mobile and hosting provider networks can fall prey to malware-infected systems as well as malicious network uses, negatively impacting their infrastructure and reputation. For example, broadband providers can have their IP address ranges “blacklisted” or added to global real time blackhole lists in response to outbound spam sourced from botnet-controlled PCs, limiting the ability for legitimate subscribers to send emails from the same shared IP space. Web hosting providers are also negatively impacted by malicious users who sign up for dedicated virtual private servers to use these systems as bulletproof hosting platforms to send spam.

“Both fixed-line and mobile broadband providers and Web hosting providers are grappling with increased and emerging security threats placing their networks at risk,” said Patrick Donegan, senior analyst, Heavy Reading. “Providers with blacklisted IP addresses may see an increase in customer support calls, customer churn and brand damage. The ability to prevent inbound and outbound messaging threats is essential.”

With Cloudmark Security Platform for Broadband, provider networks can transparently block the delivery of spam and malware from local broadband networks to the Internet, as well as block the delivery of inbound spam and malware from remote Internet sources. Cloudmark’s solution consistently blocks 99 per cent of messaging attacks in real time with near zero false positives. As a result, Cloudmark enables providers to reduce capital and operating expenses by consolidating messaging servers and infrastructure, as well as reducing bandwidth requirements through the significant reduction of messaging traffic on their networks.

The Cloudmark platform also detects and takes action on infected devices before they can impact service for other broadband subscribers. The solution integrates with an operator’s RADIUS infrastructure, enabling reputation tracking of infected devices, even as IP address assignments change. By accurately tracking infected systems and malicious senders, broadband providers are then able to apply consistent anti-abuse and class of service policies to spam sending devices, even if these devices reassociate to the network and obtain a different IP address.

Other key benefits of the Cloudmark Security Platform for Broadband include:
· Real-time Threat Response—Cloudmark Security Platform receives frequent updates from the Cloudmark Global Threat Network, which collects and correlates threat and sender intelligence data across world-wide deployments and sensors, enabling real-time protection against zero-day and rapidly evolving threats.
· Greater Visibility and Insights into Networks—Identifies spam activity and provides insights into traffic and abuse patterns, enabling passive or active management of spam outbreaks.
· Seamless Network Integration—Integrates easily into existing network topologies, supporting a broad range of messaging protocols, security intelligence feeds and data sources.

“The increased popularity of mobile devices has provided spammers with additional avenues to distribute spam and malicious messages. Not only do these attacks pose a threat to consumers, they are harmful to providers,” said Neil Cook, CTO, Cloudmark. “In today’s competitive landscape, providers must be able to ensure their customers can send and receive messages without issue. With Cloudmark’s new Security Platform for Broadband, we are enabling providers to detect and prevent spam before it becomes a costly support and brand-impacting issue.”
