BT surprises with free sports channels

U.K. incumbent admits it will not turn a profit on BT Sport any time soon; three channels to begin broadcasting in August.

BT made its long-awaited move to shake up the U.K.'s sports TV market on Thursday by announcing that its upcoming BT Sports channels will be bundled free with its broadband packages. "At the moment, too many people feel squeezed out," said Gavin Patterson, CEO of BT retail, at a press conference held at London's Olympic park. "Half the households in the U.K. want to watch high-quality sport on TV, but of those, less than half are prepared to pay the high prices on offer at the moment," he claimed.
