Following comments from an outspoken shareholder, we look at whether Verizon is likely launch a takeover bid for Vodafone.

"It's national pie day," a colleague informed me yesterday as I returned to the office at lunch time clutching a grudgingly-bought but healthy salad. It was a devastating blow. I couldn't believe I had missed an excuse to indulge in some pastry-clad meaty goodness. But it turned out to be one of those hilarious homophone moments that so enrich the English language: we were actually talking about mathematics. For reasons we wordsmiths struggle to understand, 25 years ago, physicist Larry Shaw celebrated the first national Pi day in San Francisco and in 2009 it was recognised by the U.S. House of Representatives. I do get the significance of the date though. 14 March, if you write it according to the U.S. custom, is 3/14. Clever. And here's a bonus fact for you: it's also Albert Einstein's birthday. But it doesn't take a genius to see that renewed talk of Vodafone's possible exit from Verizon Wireless is not being well received by some shareholders…
