Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council (TMBC) has selected public sector network specialists, Updata Infrastructure Ltd (Updata), to provide a PSN-ready Wide Area Network (WAN). TMBC procured the WAN via a framework for connectivity contract developed by Rochdale Borough Council in February 2012, and later made available to other members of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) – a group of ten Local Authorities working together to develop Greater Manchester as a world class region in the UK.

The new network will provide improved connectivity for around one hundred corporate sites including library buildings and council offices, and supports the Council’s overall commitment to local regeneration and support of local businesses. Importantly, the network’s high availability and flexibility will provide improved broadband access for schools that choose to connect via the Council’s WAN. Finally, the WAN will enable the Council to rationalise its property portfolio, resulting in significant revenue savings.

Julie Hayes, Head of ICT at Tameside Council, said, “Updata has a very flexible offering, and has already demonstrated a willingness to work within our specific requirements to provide a resilient solution that is a good fit for our needs rather than an ‘off-the shelf’ approach. By procuring through the AGMA framework, we were able to avoid the costly and time intensive procurement and tender process and could ensure that we chose the most cost effective and flexible WAN solution.”

Vic Baldorino, Co-Founder and Sales Director at Updata commented, “Tameside Council is poised to benefit from the AGMA contract framework that was put in place specifically to assist Councils in the North West in the procurement process. We are delighted to be supporting Tameside Council in its plans; our reliable and flexible network infrastructure facilitates collaboration by providing AGMA members with cost effective and reliable connectivity.”

The five-year framework contract, awarded to Updata in February 2012, is open to all Local Authorities within AGMA (www.AGMA.gov.uk) - the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities. Through the AGMA framework, Updata currently provides connectivity to Rochdale and Tameside Councils and is in discussions with other AGMA authorities.
