Friday Review: Oh-no, will Sprint be Softbank's Yoko?

Softbank admits U.S. acquisition will hit its balance sheet in the first year, but predicts record profits from then on.

U.S. mobile operator Sprint could prove to be a yoke (or Yoko, if you prefer) around Softbank's neck. The latter was once again Japan's fastest-growing mobile operator in the final three months of 2012, but its warning on Thursday that the $20.1 billion acquisition of Sprint will hurt its earnings this coming fiscal year may cause it to drift away from KDDI and NTT DoCoMo. Strong smartphone demand meant all three had a good Christmas, but a quick glance at the numbers showed that Softbank's was just that little bit better. It bagged 860,000 new mobile customers in the three months ended 31 December, while KDDI and DoCoMo added 700,000 and 201,000 respectively. Net profit more than doubled to $724…
