RIM renamed as BlackBerry 10 launches

Two BB10 handsets to go on sale first in U.K.; Thorsten Heins insists newly-named company will lead Internet of things.

RIM on Wednesday took the first two steps up the mountain it has to climb to regain a respectable share of the smartphone market, by renaming the company and launching its completely new BlackBerry 10 (BB10) operating system. "From today, RIM becomes BlackBerry," announced chief executive Thorsten Heins, who said BlackBerry, rather than RIM, is the brand that is recognised around the world. Heins said the company made "a tough call" in opting to develop a new OS from scratch, rather than adopt an existing one like Android or Windows Phone…
