Friday Review: Dropping analogue

Tears for teletext as U.K. completes digital switchover, and tiers for prospective EE LTE users.

Like Old Yeller, but without the rabies, the BBC's Ceefax teletext service was taken out back and tearfully put out of its misery this week, as the U.K. switched off the last of its analogue TV signals to make way for a new generation of communication services. Never a country to forego the opportunity to hold a ceremony, the U.K. drafted in 1972 Olympics gold medallist Mary Peters late on Tuesday evening to turn off the last remaining analogue transmitter, near Belfast, Northern Ireland. The switch to digital TV signals is complete and the antiquated Ceefax has been consigned to history. The end of Ceefax induced a national wave of nostalgia, as people reminisced about 'the good old days', in the same way that people who grew up without electricity and running water often do. Like a forerunner of the Internet - one devoid of pornography, pictures of cats…
