Finance Summit speakers tell it like it is, Sprint and Softbank confirm merger talks, and Chinese vendors defend themselves against U.S. accusations.

"I've been a fan and a friend of this industry for many years," Joe Gallagher, partner at KPMG UK, told the audience at Total Telecom's Finance Summit in London this week. The first slide in his presentation showed a t-shirt emblazoned with the slogan 'I ♥ telcos'. For a brief moment I thought, "oooh, I should get one of those"... then I had a word with myself. Gallagher warned the telco-dominated audience that he would speak "as a fan and as a friend of the industry. But friends can often be the hardest critics". Indeed, he went on to paint a picture of a difficult operating environment at present and of a rather bleak future for telecoms operators.
