WCIT: an opportunity to create a new Internet ecosystem

Thursday 11 October 12

Interview with Luigi Gambardella ETNO executive Board Chair

On 14 October in Istanbul, the CEPT will meet in Istanbul to discuss the position of the European Region for the revision of the International Telecommunications Regulations. The ETNO contribution to the WCIT will be one of the topics on the agenda. Why is the WCIT an important milestone for the sector? Luigi Gambardella: Since the ITRs were revised for the last time in 1988, the telecommunications market and the telecoms industry as a whole are undergoing a fundamental shift. Catalysed by the availability of higher bandwidth connectivity, new applications and services are being enabled that go far beyond the traditional services of voice calling. In both the consumer and enterprise segments, services such as Voice over IP (VoIP), social networking, instant messaging and the rise of ‘apps’ have changed the way customers use their mobile and fixed connections. Broadband infrastructures are being deployed on a large scale to allow higher and higher speeds. The WCIT will be the occasion to discuss all these changes and related challenges of the digital industry worldwide and to make an assessment of what changes are necessary to grant a solid development of the digital economy…
