T-Mobile USA, MetroPCS in $1.5bn merger

Deal gives Deutsche Telekom's U.S. unit a ready-made LTE network; combined subscriber base sees operators close gap on third-placed Sprint.

T-Mobile and MetroPCS on Wednesday confirmed plans to merge, in a bid to claw back lost ground on the U.S. mobile market's big three and become consumers' low-cost operator of choice. The combined entity will have 42.5 million customers, bringing it closer to nearest rival and third-biggest operator Sprint, which ended the second quarter with 56.4 million.
