Friday Review: Spectrum comes to those who wait

While Everything Everywhere customers might find an LTE device in their Christmas stockings this year, 3UK users will not.

3UK plans to launch LTE services in the 1800-MHz spectrum it agreed to acquire from Everything Everywhere earlier this week. That the announcement came just hours after Ofcom gave Everything Everywhere the green light to refarm that spectrum for LTE was no coincidence: LTE was always going to be part of the deal. Everything Everywhere can now move forward with its LTE project, which includes offering services before the end of the year, more than likely under a new brand. The telco admitted this week that it is working on a new brand name to sit alongside Orange and T-Mobile, under the Everything Everywhere umbrella; it is widely expected that the new name will be for 4G services. However, it is less clear how long 3 will have to wait before it can follow suit and roll out a high-speed network of its own. As we reported on Tuesday…
