Friday Review: Lovely Jub-ilee

By Mary Lennighan, Total Telecom
Friday 01 June 12

A round-up of the week's news highlights against a backdrop of patriotism and nostalgia.

I'm reliably informed that when I was barely old enough to be able to talk I was dressed up in my Sunday best and taken out to see the queen as she drove by. That was in 1977, the year the British monarch celebrated her silver jubilee, the 25th anniversary of her accession to the throne. 35 years on (I know, it's hard to believe I'm that old; I can only presume something went awry in the space-time continuum) and she's at it again. I can't speak for the rest of the U.K., but London is patriotically festooned with union flags and virtually every high street shop window is bulging with red, white and blue souvenirs. Thus far I've resisted the allure of the commemorative tea towel; an extra bank holiday to mark the occasion will more than suffice. It goes without saying that the U.K. telecoms industry looks decidedly different today than it did in 1977 (don't we all?)…
