Friday Review: To LTE or not to LTE

Even as Everything Everywhere plans LTE launch and the new iPad hits the shelves, the industry still questions whether the economics of LTE stack up.

"[LTE requires] a lot of investment. Are we going to get that back?" asked Ovum principal analyst Steven Hartley, introducing Total Telecom's 'LTE Opportunities' breakfast event in London this week. It was timely question, coming just hours after Ofcom revealed that it is keen to approve Everything Everywhere's bid to refarm its 1800-MHz spectrum for LTE services, and a fortnight after PCCW's UK Broadband announced the launch of its wholesale TD-LTE network in London.
