Friday Review: Glory days

Voda makes a move for Cable & Wireless, and small cells kit makers make room for WiFi.

"I've been dying to get this out and show somebody," my neighbour at a lunch table on Wednesday turned to me and said. I was suitably relieved when he pulled a handful of sheets of paper from his bag, one of which was a plan of the internal workings of a femtocell. The man in question was Nick Johnson, founder and CTO of U.K. company ip.access, which this week unveiled its first LTE small cell product at a lunch event at the Groucho Club. More on that later. The event naturally triggered some discussion around the table about the glory days of journalism, when we wordsmiths spent more time at similar press lunches and doing pub-based networking than we did in the office. Not that I can remember those days, of course, but I still imagine them fondly. Speaking of the good old days, one U.K. telco this week reminded the industry how the mighty have fallen. It came as no major surprise that Cable & Wireless Worldwide found itself the subject of a possible takeover bid on Monday…
