2011's forecasts: How right we were

With another year rapidly disappearing into the sunset it's time to find out how many of the industry predictions we made this time last year came to pass.

Before a fresh year in telecoms begins to unfold there is just enough time to look back over the last 12 months and verify how accurate Total Telecom's predictions for 2011 were. Early signs are encouraging. "There will be more pressure on Google to go beyond search in 2011 as discovering things on the Internet continues to become more social," said one team member. That is precisely what the Silicon Valley Internet giant did in June when it unveiled its own social network, Google+, which aimed to steal some of Facebook's thunder by allowing users to arrange video chats and to organise their contacts into different groups, called circles. Less than a month later comScore put the membership of Google+ at 20 million, which admittedly pales into insignificance compared to Facebook's 800 million active users, but nevertheless it is a strong start. As well as becoming more sociable, Google's perpetual shopping spree continued. Without going into exhaustive detail, its 26 acquisitions this year included Motorola Mobility…
