Pachube, a LogMeIn company, has just released the beta of OnBoard, a turnkey service for commercial manufacturers to get their devices onto the Internet of Things and create Internet-connected services.

With this new service, Pachube is making it simple for device makers to connect their devices to the Pachube Internet service and give their customers access to their own device data. Once a device is registered with Pachube via OnBoard, end users can claim their device, giving them the ability to analyse and share their device data or combine that data with other applications.

OnBoard was developed with the input of commercial manufacturers seeking to internet enable their devices, including Current Cost™, a leading provider of home energy monitoring products with over two million monitors deployed. Current Cost is the first commercial energy monitor to open its data to Pachube users. Today, any Current Cost device owner can visit the Pachube site, enter the serial number of their energy monitor, and interact with their device data via a customised dashboard.

“As a leader in affordable home-energy monitors, we see the potential of Internet-connected devices,” says Martin Dix CEO of Current Cost. “Building on Pachube allowed us to get a compelling, reliable connected service to market quickly. The next step is to empower our users to share their data and collaborate with other users to make better decisions. We chose Pachube because we believe their platform can help us go from a company that sells connected devices to a company that builds communities of connected energy users.”

The OnBoard service offers three capabilities central to getting devices on to the Internet and creating connected services:

1. Device bulk-registration: Commercial manufacturers can provision devices onto Pachube and specify which Pachube services to use.

2. End-user account integration: Device owners can now claim their devices and their data directly on Pachube with a simple serial-number registration.

3. Dashboards: Once devices are claimed, users can interact with customised dashboards hosted on Pachube.com and use a range of apps built on top of data stored on Pachube.

Additional information on the OnBoard beta is available on the Pachube blog.

“We’re trying to make it easier for device makers of all shapes and sizes to integrate with the Pachube service and give their users access to their own device data,” says Usman Haque, founder of Pachube. “Our vision for the Internet of Things is that it should be as simple, innovative, valuable, and open as the Web is. OnBoard makes it easier for device makers to realise that vision.”
