Friday Review: Smell you later

Mistrusting telcos sniff each other like dogs, but at the same time talk up the need for greater collaboration.

"The telecoms environment is a bit xenophobic," warned new iDate chairman Francois Barrault at the organisation's annual DigiWorld Summit in Montpellier, France this week. "It's like dogs: they smell each other," he said, highlighting telecoms operators' lack of trust when it comes to the different players within other sectors of the telecoms industry. The industry needs to foster a competitive, but cooperative, environment between the various links in the value chain: operators, equipment makers, over-the-top content providers and so on, Barrault insisted. As such, iDate has created the DigiWorld Institute, a European think tank that it hopes will facilitate open dialogue across the industry, bringing the various players together…
