Friday Review: Penultimate sacrifice

Deutsche Telekom reveals the hardships people are prepared to endure to keep their smartphones.

Today is the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year, and while everybody should take a moment to remember the ultimate sacrifice paid by so many in conflicts all over the world, plus several more moments to ignore the many inane comments remarking on how quirky it is to have 11/11/11 appear on all the calendars, there was also an opportunity earlier this week to contemplate the hardships people are prepared to endure to avoid giving up using their smartphones. "43% would give away their beer," revealed Andy Lesser, senior vice president of service management at Deutsche Telekom, at the inaugural Total Telecom World in London on Monday. Google surveyed 5,000 U.S. smartphone owners, asking what they would be prepared to give up in order to keep using their smartphones for a month. 36% of respondents said they would forego chocolate before their smartphone; 26% would not wear their high heels for a month…
