Friday Review: Keeping up appearances

M2M high on the agenda at Ericsson's Silicon Valley get together; talk of Microsoft's Skype acquisition also featured.

"I wear jeans... we all wear jeans," said Geoff Martin, head of Sprint's M2M collaboration centre in Burlingame, California, on the outskirts of Silicon Valley, this week. Despite being half an hour's bus ride from Palo Alto, and even further away from Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Cupertino, Martin was determined to convey that he and his colleagues fall in with the rest of the gang by upholding the traditions of innovation and entrepreneurship associated with Silicon Valley, and adhering to the dress code that goes with it. "Don't worry if your tie is straight or if your shoes match your belt," he said, at the Business Innovation Forum, an annual event organised by Ericsson. A cursory glance at my own attire revealed that at least on one level I can put myself alongside some of the world's brightest minds.
