(Almost) Friday Review: Wedding bells

Nokia gives Symbian the elbow and cuts thousands of staff as rival players make further inroads into the tablets space.

I don't purport to speak for the U.K. as a whole, but it's fair to say that most people I know didn't really care when Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement... until we discovered that a Royal Wedding meant an extra bank holiday. Thus, for the second week running the Total Telecom Friday Review comes to you a day early. And with this having been a three-day working week in the U.K., you could be forgiven for presuming that there is not a lot of news to review. But you'd be wrong. This is the telecoms industry after all. Whether or not the tie up between Nokia and Microsoft will turn out to be a marriage made in heaven was the subject of many online discussion forums from Wednesday onwards, after Nokia effectively divorced from its under-fire mobile operating system Symbian... or at least started sleeping in the spare room.
