NFC: With liability comes opportunity for operators

NFC is coming and following in its wake are a mass of inconvenient truths regarding revenue assurance and fraud.

Mobile network operators have been eyeing up near field communication (NFC) and the contactless payments industry for years. The GSMA outlined operator community guidance for the parties involved in the development of mobile NFC services five Mobile World Congresses ago, while this year saw the U.K. launch of Barclaycard's contactless payments card. However, other than Sony's FeliCa solution in Japan, we are still waiting to see any credible mobile NFC deployments. It is fairly easy to see why NFC has not taken off so far. Its roll out would require huge investment on the part of the OEMs, and support from software developers and the merchant community…
