Friday Review: Evolution not revolution

As LTE goes live in the U.S. and Austria completes its 2.6 GHz auction, analysts keep the industry's feet on the ground.

3G Long Term Evolution, LTE for short, has been making plenty of headlines during 2010, but there were significant developments this week as one of Europe's most mature mobile broadband markets completed its spectrum auction, while across the pond one U.S. operator launched the country's first commercial LTE network. The U.S. has become the third market in the world to begin offering live LTE services, joining Sweden, Norway and Uzbekistan – which has two competing LTE providers, MTS and UCell – when prepaid operator MetroPCS on Tuesday switched on its LTE network. Customers have a choice of two prepay tariffs both offering unlimited calls, texts and data usage, priced at $55 and $60 respectively per month.
