Friday Review: Hold the phone

Nokia jibes at rivals but fails to make the earth move; plus this week's news highlights.

The English invented football, as often overly-vocal and frustrated England fans are so fond of pointing out... usually as a rival nation with a lesser footballing pedigree has just gone 3-0 up 20 minutes into the second half. With that in mind, I had to wonder why, when presenting the Nokia E7 - a reincarnation of the Nokia Communicator and one of the vendor's new Symbian 3 devices – Nokia's EVP and general manager of mobile solutions Anssi Vanjoki saw fit to remind the audience that: "the reality is that Nokia invented the smartphone." That may well be true, after all the first Nokia Communicator hit the shelves as long ago as 1996. But is harking back to a device that it introduced 15 years ago – a device that was admittedly cutting-edge at the time, but now looks smirk-inspiringly dated - really the best way for Nokia to convince the market that its new family of devices…
