Column inches in the Canadian press were filled with reports from the Canadian Telecom Summit this week, but the event barely registered on the world stage. Surprising, given the amount of discussion over potential changes to foreign direct investment rules in the country, which could have significant effects for telecoms operators and investors globally. On Monday Canada's industry minister Tony Clement took to the stage in Toronto to deliver the event's opening keynote, during which he pledged to look into changing foreign investment regulations. "We are intending to move ahead with telecommunications reform when it comes to foreign direct investment," he said, announcing the opening of a consultation on the subject.
