An authoritative new report from benchmark-it finds that the impact of the global recession on Western European incumbent PTTs has been relatively mild, helped by the growing role of telecoms services in many aspects of everyday life. Nevertheless, pricing and cost pressures remain and opportunities for revenue growth from emerging markets are limited or prohibitively expensive.
Report author Rob Pritchard observes: “Those incumbents that chose to invest in emerging markets some years ago are clearly outperforming their peers in terms of growth in revenues and customer base.”
The report also finds that a period of in-market consolidation has started across European countries, which is likely to be followed by trans-border consolidation, starting with smaller incumbents.
Pritchard added: “You only have to look at what has happened in the USA and at other vertical sectors around the world to see that consolidation between incumbents is inevitable.”
