Friday Review: All I want for Christmas...

iPhone news abounds as prices come down in U.K. and new launches loom; elsewhere, the major U.S. mobile players hit the headlines, and Nokia closes stores.

...is a cheap iPhone, judging by the thousands of readers who clicked on yesterday's news that U.K. supermarket Tesco will undercut mobile operators O2 and Orange on the price of the 3G and 3GS versions of the Apple handset, which it will begin selling on Monday. Tesco perhaps should have started selling the iPhone earlier if it really wants to capture the holiday market, but then again, I've barely started my Christmas shopping yet, so maybe there is time for the retailer to capture yet more of the U.K. consumer wallet share over the festive period. The supermarket will be the first in the U.K. to offer the iPhone on a 12-month contract; the trend for mobile operators to lock-in their customers to increasingly long contracts naturally includes high-value iPhone customers.
